Europe — the bases

Further Afield — the long-haul classics

Worth it when it suits — and a natural fit around your February trip to New Zealand, since Southeast Asia and Japan sit right on the UK↔NZ route. Season note: your Dec–Feb window is peak dry season on the SE-Asian mainland (Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia) but wet season in Bali and the Philippines. Every one is non-Schengen. ◆ On the NZ-stopover logic

Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur are the tightest stopovers — direct from London with frequent onward Auckland flights. Vietnam is good; Japan and Taiwan are more of a deliberate detour than a natural waypoint (best chained with a Bali or SE-Asia leg). Also considered: Ho Chi Minh City / Hanoi (direct ~12h, but Hanoi is grey in winter) and Siargao (beautiful, but hardest to reach and wet in your window).

Visa & legal — the backbone

The destinations only matter if you can legally stay. This is research, not legal advice — verify time-sensitive items against official sources before you book or apply.

◆ Ireland & the UK: unlimited, clock-free

Both of you hold UK passports, so the Common Travel Area lets you live and work in Ireland indefinitely — no visa, no time limit, Brexit-proof. The UK is the same. These absorb any amount of the “outside Schengen” half of the rotation with zero paperwork. (Alex's NZ passport adds nothing for Schengen — NZ is third-country too.)

The 90/180 rule, precisely

90 days inside Schengen in any rolling 180. Entry and exit days both count. Briefly leaving does not reset it — days free up only as they roll out the back of the window. Recovering a full fresh 90 needs ~90 continuous days outside. Model real dates in the official EU short-stay calculator, not blog tools.

The border is automated now (EES → ETIAS)

EES went live Oct 2025, fully mandatory Apr 2026 — biometric, 5-year memory, shared across all 29 states; airlines check your remaining days before boarding. The passport-stamp fudge is dead. ETIAS (a separate ~€7 online authorisation) is expected late 2026 into 2027 — timing unconfirmed, so re-check before you fly.

Two corrections worth pinning

Romania & Bulgaria joined full Schengen (Jan 2025) — they now burn your 90 days, no longer escape valves. Albania gives UK passports 90 days, not a year (the 1-year deal is US-only). Cyprus is EU-but-not-Schengen — genuinely clock-free for now (likely joins ~2027).

Digital-nomad visas — the tool to sit still in ONE country 3+ months (income re-indexes yearly; verify)

Tax — the one to get advice on

183+ days in a country generally triggers tax residency there. UK residence is decided by the Statutory Residence Test (day-count + ties), not a simple 183 — and non-dom status was abolished in 2025. Stay well under 183 everywhere, keep a deliberate anchor (UK or Ireland), and book a UK tax adviser before departure for your specific circumstances.

How to actually secure 4–8 week stays at budget — and where £1,000 vs £2,000 realistically lands.

The 28-night rule

Crossing 28 nights unlocks Airbnb's monthly discount (20–35%) and spreads the cleaning fee across the stay. Your 4–8 week plan (28–56 nights) clears it everywhere — never book a “3.5 week” stay when rounding up to 28 is cheaper. And Airbnb's Dec-2025 fee change (single ~15.5% host fee, no separate guest fee) made it more competitive than the old advice assumes.

Platforms, ranked by friendliness

Flatio (best reviews ~4.3, deposit-free, bills included) and Wunderflats (flat €299 fee, DE/AT/ES/PT/IT) are the kindest for long stays. HousingAnywhere (25–40% of first month) and Spotahome carry real deposit/fee complaint tails — screenshot every fee, keep money on-platform until keys in hand.

Coliving = your soft-landing move

Best way to plug into community fast at a first base — then pivot to a direct monthly rental. For a couple it's a premium (~£1,500–1,750/mo) everywhere except Bansko/Balkans (£300–700 all-in). Verify the brand still trades: Selina collapsed, Remote Year's gone, Habyt sold its ES/PT coliving.

The barbell tactic

Spend most bases in the cheap/mid tier at £600–1,200 and bank the savings to fund one £2,000 special stint (a Lisbon or Canaries stretch), ideally off-season and booked direct-monthly. First week pre-booked → then hunt a direct monthly deal locally (~25% cheaper) via Idealista / local FB groups. Never wire money before a live viewing; a below-market price + “pay today” urgency is the #1 scam tell.
